HSSC Video A lot of members have requested an upgrade from still webcam images to video. To oblige, an experimental video service has now been implemented. However, this must be used sparingly.
So, why all the strict rules? Bandwidth is the amount of information which can be sent over an internet connection per second. HSSC's service provider, BT Internet, provides 8 Mbps bandwidth. This cannot be increased. HSSC's cam and weather station already utilises a lot of bandwidth, transmitting weather data every 3 seconds, and still web cam images every 30 seconds. However, just one person accessing the video link utilises nearly all the available 8 Mbps - on their own! Heavy use of the video link will hence impact on the reliability of the weather and still cam services already in place. At times, weather data transfer may fail if bandwidth limits are reached. Traffic is the total amount of data transferred over a given time. Traffic limits are imposed by service providers. Our limit from BT Broadband is 2GB per month. This could be increased, but would entail an increased charge to HSSC by BT. I have calculated that the still cam images and weather data uploads constitutes about 1.6 GB per month. Video transfer will use a lot more data still. Heavy use of the video link may require an upgrade to our BT account at an increased charge to HSSC. In summary, if people are using the video feed too much, we may find that: upload of our weather data starts to deteriorate; we may find the video feed itself very jumpy; and we may find that BT asks us for more money! For these reasons I respectfully ask all members to abide by the above rules, and reserve the right to remove the video service at any time. MDM.
